Central Plant Upgrades PCCA

Project Overview

Pro-Tech Energy Solutions was hired by The Pennsylvania Convention Center (PCCA) to perform a design-build retrofit of the building’s original central plant.  The project scope included two major components.  The first task was to replace three existing 1,750-ton cooling towers including new condenser water piping and integration with the building management system.  The second task was to replace the existing stainless steel flue piping for the gas-fired hot water boilers.

Project Challenges

The central plant equipment is located at the roof level adjacent to the loading docks on the Race Street side of the building.  The installation was carefully phased to provide partial chilled water capacity during the PCCA’s busiest season, including the International Flower Show.  The project was designed using BIM modeling software that allowed for large, complex sections of the piping system to be fabricated offsite.  The reduction in on-site manpower achieved through 3D BIM modeling allowed the remaining trades (equipment assembly, controls, electrical, etc.) to complete their tasks within the allotted time constraints in a safer and more efficient manner.
